They need a different approach to what is being presented at school.

Is your child already showing signs of struggling this year?

It can be easy to shrug off the difficulty that your child may be having with school, especially at the beginning of the school year. They are in a new grade, have a new teacher, and have new peers. You tell yourself that they will catch on. They will catch up. They just need more time. More sleep. We need to get through this sport. We just need things to slow down a little!

Maybe there are tears from your child, but you have so many other things to deal with.
You wonder if something is going on… but you’re not quite sure.

As parents (and grandparents) we are juggling so many things. There is always something that needs to get done. Something that needs to be fixed. Another meal that needs to be made! Clothes to buy, gifts to shop for, vacations to plan, work to get done! It’s truly never-ending!

But please don’t shrug off your nagging worries about your child.

The longer they struggle, the more their self esteem takes a hit.
The longer you wait, the harder it will be for them to catch up with their class.
The more you ignore, the less they will bring it up. “I guess this is just who I am,” they will think. They will lose hope. They will assume that nothing can be done and maybe they are just dumb. (Sounds harsh, but this is what goes on in our brains when we struggle!)

Giving your child the proper tools to use for reading, spelling, and math is like getting your child fit with the right glasses.

I’ll never forget getting my glasses for the first time and realizing that trees weren’t just a blob of green– now I could see the individual leaves!
The ground wasn’t just a sea of green– I could see each blade of grass!

Some kids need “glasses” for their brains.

  • They need a different approach to what is being presented at school.
  • They need a new way of slowing down the speed of their brain to think more clearly.
  • They need to tap into their strengths of creativity and relating to images and pictures to help them with math or other terminology.
  • They need strategies to tap into when stress, frustration, and anxiety takes over while doing schoolwork.

 

It’s always better to catch learning challenges sooner rather than later, so that you can empower your child with the tools they need to succeed in school and other areas of their life!

Here are some signs that shows your child may need some extra support:

  • Frequent Headaches or Migraines: A result of mental fatigue, especially after reading, writing, or focusing on tasks for long periods.
    Stomach Aches: Anxiety or stress about school or challenging tasks can cause “butterflies” or even regular stomach pain.
  • Eye Strain or Rubbing Eyes: Children might squint or rub their eyes frequently due to the strain of trying to focus on words or numbers.
  • Fatigue or Exhaustion: Constantly working harder than peers to keep up with schoolwork can leave them physically drained by the end of the day.
  • Frequent Fidgeting or Restlessness: To relieve discomfort, children may fidget, wiggle, or seem unable to sit still, which can be particularly common with ADHD.
  • Complaints of Dizziness or Nausea: These may appear especially during reading or other close-up tasks due to the mental and visual strain.

Signs may show up that are more emotional in nature:

  • Irritability or Mood Swings: Frustration with difficult tasks may lead to sudden mood changes, including anger, sadness, or irritability.
  • Frequent Meltdowns or Tantrums: Difficulty with school tasks or homework can lead to emotional outbursts, as they may feel overwhelmed or unable to cope.
  • Low Self-Esteem: Negative self-talk or frequent comparisons to other children, saying things like “I’m not smart” or “I can’t do anything right.”
  • Avoidance or Refusal to go to school: School anxiety may develop when they consistently struggle or feel “different” from their peers.
  • Fear of failure: May become anxious about trying new things, avoiding activities where they fear they won’t succeed.
  • Withdrawal or social isolation: Prefers solitary activities over group ones, possibly due to social difficulties or feeling misunderstood by peers.

Trust your gut. If you think something is going on, you’re probably right.
